Brittania Royal Naval College - Dartmouth

Projects

A small selection of some of the works we have been involved in over the last 20 plus years. We hope that they help to outline the type of work that we are very proud to have undertaken.

The Royal William Yard, Plymouth

Since 1996 we have been involved with the stonework repairs and restoration within this historic former Naval victualling yard. Under various contracts with national building contractors and in direct contracts with the South West of England Regional Development Agency, we have completed approximately £7 million worth of work on this site.

The works consist of a combination of stone cleaning, conservation, repairs and replacement of Plymouth limestone and Cornish granite.

Numerous very large and heavy structural stones needed to be replaced (some weighing as much as 3 tonnes). Major temporary support works were required in order to replace these elements of the various buildings on this site.

We have won 2 national awards from the Stone Federation Great Britain for our work and were voted sub-Contractor of the year 2004. At the time of writing we still have ongoing contracts on this massive site (see testimonials).

Small works on Churches

From our earliest days we have carried out conservation and repair work on countless churches. These have always formed a large and important part of our work load.

The historical, architectural and cultural value to our communities dictate that they require the very highest standards of care and craftsmanship. Nothing less is acceptable.

Lloyds T.S.B Banks

This sub-contract, undertaken for Midas Interiors raised particular challenges. For many years we have worked in busy high street locations, individual banks, building societies, retail stores, town halls etc.

However, this contract was carried out on a rolling programme of work to 15 branches throughout Cornwall, Devon, Dorset and Somerset over a 5 month period. Working with the main contractor and other sub-contractors such as scaffolders, painters and decorators and other trades a detailed programme was developed. When working in high street locations the number one priority is always the protection of the public, the clients, customers and staff. For this reason all stone cleaning, noisy or disruptive work was carried out, outside of normal working hours. The total value of our work on this contract was over £150k.

We are pleased to say that all targets were achieved.

Holy Trinity Church, Barnstaple

One of our more recent contracts, completed in 2009. The Doff stone cleaning system was used to gently clean the Bath stone dressings in order to remove harmful carbon deposits. The project included repointing, repairs and replacements of structurally defective sections to the Bath stone balustrading and tracery windows. Walling and buttress stones were repaired, where necessary with Forest of Dean sandstone. (see testimonials)

Crawley Bridge, A30

The challenge, to reinstate the stonework parapets and copings on this beautiful country bridge. The clients were Devon County Council. Main contractors, Dyer and Butler. The stone used was Peak Moor sandstone to replace ugly metal railings. The stonemasonry works were undertaken in conjunction with the main contractors repair works to the bridge deck on a very busy road which could not be closed to traffic.
